What to keep in mind when you buy an electric guitar?

Real fun and good sound only come up, if the instrument is crafted by experienced instrument makers and made out of valuable materials.

The body should be made out of solid wood, because inferior plywood doesn't offer a satisfying sound. A reasonable neck can be played easy, the strings vibrate in a short distance to the fretboard and the frets don't reach beyond the fringe of the fretboard. An exactly notched nut offers a low-friction leading of the strings and the truss rod makes it possible to adjust the cove of the neck into two directions. Machine heads have to work precisely and the neck joint should fit firmly.

Well sounding pickups are the key to the typical sound of an electronic guitar. There's no quality difference between a single coil equipped guitar or an instrument with double coiled Humbucker pickups. Popular branded pickups, which transmit the signal without any disturbance should be the first choice. With a proper working electronic you can adjust the sound the way you like.

Take care of an accurate workmanship of the finish. The finish saves the wood from humidity and gives the instrument a glossy look.

A solid bridge is made out of metal and it can't be bended by hand. This is the only way how strings can vibrate freely.

The ideal guitar shouldn't be either too heavy or too light. A light instrument is often made out of plywood, which doesn't have good sound quality. A heavy instrument most of all is made out of lumber-core wood and isn't able to transmit the vibrations of the strings accurately. Furthermore it is uncomfortable to play such a heavy instrument and may be hurtful for your back. The ideal weight lies between 3 - 4 kg.
